Research & Development

McBride Fishing is continually looking at ways to develop its business, assess and improve fishing stocks, seeking new fishing grounds and improving the products for customers.

We are currently inolved in a number of projects with BIM, Dept of Zoology in Trinity College Dublin and others. Some details on our ongoing projects are outlined below.

Stock Assessment

In the 1990s McBride Fishing teamed up with the Dept of Zoology, Trinity College Dublin and Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) to assess crab stocks in the region. This is an ongoing project and will ensure that crab stocks are managed in a sustainable fashion.

New Fishing Grounds

McBride Fishing conducts exploratory fishing surveys away from the North West coast of Ireland from time to time. Recent trips have been made to the West Hebrides, the Celtic Sea, and western areas off France. On these trips visiting scientists work in collaboration with McBride Fishing crews.

New Species

Recently McBride Fishing, in collaboration with BIM and Dept of Zoology, Trinity College Dublin, has secured NDP funding to search for new species of crab that would be suitable for the commercial market (Project 01.SM.T1.08). The work has concentrated on the Rockall Banks and the species Chaceon affinis and Cancer bellianus.
